My father had three sons.  We all see him differently.  Each takes a unique perspective of him, where some features are emphasized and highlighted and others are kept in shadows.  Our opinions are not in conflict, they complement each other.  But when we talk about him, the picture becomes patched and flattened, because shadowy sides are dragged to the front and may overlap the original front view.  Matisse used this technique of flattening.
